What is The Difference Between RFID Inlay and RFID Tag

Many people all know RFID tag and RFID inlay, but few people know the difference between them. This is a article about the difference between RFID inlay and RFID tag as following:

There are practical and physical difference between the RFID tag, RFID inlay and RFID label. An RFID inlay is the functional portion of RFID label. It is made up of the antenna to which a microchip (IC) is attached. The RFID inlay can be either “Wet inlay” or “Dry inlay”.

Wet inlay has an adhesive backing with a clear or colored top surface of PVC, PET or paper. It is commonly used to make RFID labels where the wet inlay is placed on the back of the RFID label with the adhesive side away from the label side so that the label has continuous adhesive.

RFID Dry inlay is typically attached to the substrate (or carrier) backing material commonly called the web. If adhesive is added, it is called a wet inlay or pressure-sensitive inlay.

In both cases, the inlay is supplied to a converter where it is inserted into a RFID label or tag or whatever type of construction is required for the application.

Simple RFID tags are described as passive. Instead of containing batteries, they work entirely by responding to the incoming radio waves from the scanner or transmitter. There is just enough energy in those radio waves to activate the RFID chip. Passive rfid tags typically send and receive signals only a few centimeters, but not much more. An alternative form of RFID technology, known as active RFID tags, contain more advanced chips and tiny batteries to power them. They can send and receive signals over much greater distances.

An RFID tag will have three components, namely the chip, antenna and the substrate. The chip and antenna are held together by an interconnect. This arrangement is supported by a substrate namely silicon. what plastic you are saying is the encasement. The chip, antenna and substrate together forms an RFID inlay which has got an adhesive on one side to make it stick on any object or item. These inlays are manufactured in roll and supplied to the customers.

RFID Labels can be supplied as bare, RFID inlays on a PET substrate with or without an adhesive side (RFID wet inlay or RFID dry inlay). If you want a completely clear label that shows the inlay, EG can provide these also.
